Cabinet Construction & Material Options
Cabinets & Drawer Boxes
Natural Wood Cabinets
Particle Board is made from recycled and reclaimed wood.
Plywood is made of layered sheets of wood veneer.
Solid Wood cabinets are crafted from kiln-dried timber.
Engineered Wood Cabinets
Fiberboard is made of wood fibers created from the leftovers of real wood products.
Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is stronger than particle board.
High Density Fiberboard (HDF) is manufactured a bit differently and uses more resin, so it is stronger than MDF.
Cabinet Doors & Drawer Faces
Maple, Hickory & Cherry are the most durable hardwoods for cabinets, but also cost more.
Birch, Beech, Oak & Alder are the more affordable options for natural wood cabinets, but are less durable.
Coated MDF is a durable and low-maintenance engineered wood. Though they are synthetic, most engineered wood cabinets still look like painted or stained wood.
Cabinet Frame & Door Overlay
Face frame is attached to the front of cabinet doors and drawers, making them stronger and more durable. Framed cabinets are standard in the US.
No face frame with glides attached to the doors and drawer boxes for a seamless design. Frameless cabinets are most popular in Europe.
Cabinet Door Overlay
How much of the face frame is exposed on the cabinets. A partial door overlay is standard and less expensive. You can also choose full overlay or inset doors, but both are more expensive and require cabinet hardware.
Cabinet Design & Configuration
Types of Cabinets
Wall cabinets are usually 24” tall, but vary greatly in width. They usually have single or double doors and may have some height variation, such as shorter cabinets installed over built in appliances.
Base cabinets are standing height to support countertops. There are also standard sink base cabinets with false drawers and room for plumbing and under-sink storage.
Corner cabinets are designed to increase storage space. Angled cabinets are the most common corner wall cabinet. The most popular corner base cabinets are blind corner cabinets and lazy susan cabinets.
Pantry cabinets are the best use of vertical space. They are taller than standard base cabinets, with adjustable shelving, a large storage area, and many storage options.
Cabinet Door Design
Most modern cabinets feature raised panel doors, shaker style doors, cathedral (arched) doors, slab doors, bead board (beaded panel) doors, or louvered doors. You can also give your cabinets a touch of elegance by incorporating glass cabinet doors.
When it comes to cabinet finish, you need to consider the material you chose as well. You can leave wood unfinished, or choose a stain or paint color, but engineered wood must be factory finished with Thermofoil or Duraform.
Built In Cabinets & Appliances
Integrated appliances and convenient storage solutions are all the rage in modern home design. Though this new trend is most useful in the kitchen, it can easily be applied in your dining room, living room, basement, and other areas of your home as well.
When done well, these features are designed to increase space and impress your guests:
- Built in cabinets
- Built in bookshelves
- Built in spice rack
- Built in microwave (over range microwave)
- Built in refrigerator or freezer
- Built in trash compactor or dishwasher
- Built in wall oven or range
Add these accessories to make your cabinets more accessible, functional and convenient:
- Door and drawer hardware
- Under cabinet lighting
- Tip-out trays
- Pull-out shelves
- Drawer organizers
